Canada sells as many goods to the USA as they buy, no commercial deficit. But not including the oil exported from Alberta to Texas, and sold 10% under the market price, as a commercial gesture. And not including in reverse the services of the American GAFA+, which Canada has accepted not to tax. So far.
In the recent commercial negotiations, someone in the USA delegation asked, in the last few days, that they be given the right to oversee and veto any deal between Canada and some other countries (no doubt China in all thoughts). Canada has refused this attack on their independence, rightly in my opinion. Mainly coming after repeated attacks from the actual president of the USA calling Canada its 51th state, or calling the prime minister of Canada a governor... The potential rivality between some key American government members to show their President whom is a better negotiator will not help in my opinion a business constructive steady negotiation.
Economical exchanges between the two countries have been intertwined for dozens of years, with the business companies deciding to maufacture here or there, not the governments. Trying to decouple them now is hurting both countries. Canada has a border with the USA, and should not be treated as any other foreign country. Same said for Mexico.
As for the claims of the actual President of the USA that the USA do not need anything that Canada produces... it is laughable and a poor negotiating claim. Critical minerals, Water, Energy like oil or electricity, and Cement are just some examples. The Canadian wood is also much appreciated thanks to the impact of the very cold winters.
First of all, the USA must respect Canada and abandon their claim for overseeing any aspect of the foreign policy of Canada, commercial or not.
As for the claims from the USA... Canada could allow USA dairy products like cheese to enter without any tariff, or a nominative 10%? The milk quotas could be reviewed, and the 300% maximum tariff (never applied) could be lowered to 100%? As for Fentanyl drugs, it was never an issue (over 90% coming from the Mexico border). Cars, wood, aluminium and steel need to be reviewed in light of the existing business structure, listening to the businesses choices and not penalising the buyers on both sides of the border. New production facilites cannot surge in a few months (make it 2 to 5 years), and business presidents need stable environment to invest. Same for the Stock exchange...
As for the other subjects, let Canada and USA spell out on all their export goods which country they were made in. And let the consumers choose... and the governments concentrate on Asian exports (China, South Korea, Taiwan), with their very low cost of manpower, or their ultra robotisation, and at times the support of their governments.

Le Canada wend autant de marchandies aux Etats Unis qu il n en achete, pas de deficit commercial. Lors des recentes negotiations commerciales, quelqu un dans la delegation americaine a demande, dans les derniers jours, que les Etats Unis aient un droit de regard, et de veto, sur les accords commerciaux ou autres entre le Canada et d autres pays (surement la Chine dans tous les esprits). Le Canada a refuse cette ataque sur leur souveraineté. avec raison a mon avis. Surtout apres les attaques repetees du president actuel des Etats Unis qui appelle le Canada son 51eme etat, ou appelle le premier ministre "gouverneur"... La rivalite potentielle entre quelques membres du gouvernement americain pour demontrer a leur president qui est le meilleur negotiateur ne va pas contribuer a mon avis a une negotiation constructive, serieuse et stable.
Les echanges economiques entre ces deux pays ont ete tres serres depuis des dizaines d annees, les companies deciding de produitre dans tel ou tel pays, pas les gouvernements. Essayer maintenant de decoupler ces economies va faire mal aux deux pays. Le Canada a une frontiere avec les Etats Unis, et ne devrait pas etre traite comme n importe quel pays etranger. Pareil for le Mexique.
Quant aux declarations du president actuel des Etats Unis que son pays n'a besoin de rien qui vienne du Canada products... c'est une tactique de negotiation risible. Les mineraux critiques, l'Eau, l'Energie (petrole et electricité), et coment sont juste quelques examples. Le bois canadien est egalement tres apprecie grace aux rigueurs de l'hiver canadien.
En premier, les Etats Unis doivent respecter le Canada et abandonner leur demande de controler toute partie de la politique etrangere du Canada, commerciale ou non.
Quant aux demandes des Etats Unis,... le Canada pourrait laisser entrer les produits laitiers comme le fromage sans droits de douane, ou juste 10%? Les quotas sur le lait pourraient etre revus, et le tarif maximum de 300% (jamais appliqué) pourrait etre reduit a 100%? Quant au Fentanyl (drogue), cela n;a jamais ete un probleme (plus de 90% rentre par le Mexique). Les voitures, le bois, l'aluminium et l'acier devraient etre analyses en fonction de la structure industrielle presente, en ecoutant les choix des entreprises privees et sans penaliser les clients des deux cotes de la frontiere. De nouvelles ccapacites de production ne peuvent pas sortir de terre en quelques mois (plutot 2 a 5 ans), et les patrons des entreprises privees ont besoin d'une vision a long terme stable. Tout comme la bourse...
Quand aux autres produits, le Canada et les Etats Unis devraient s'assurer de mettre leur nom sur tous les produits exportes, et laisser les clients choisir... etles gouvernements devraient se concentrer sur les importations d'Asie (Chine, Coree du Sud, Taiwan), avec leur cout bas de main d oeuvre, et leur ultra robotisation, et ici ou la l'aide de leurs guvernements.
